PHP, or Hypertext Preprocessor, has come a long way since its humble beginnings as Personal Home Pages (PHP/FI) in 1994. Originally designed by Rasmus Lerdorf as a tool for monitoring visitor traffic on his personal website, PHP/FI was later released as an open-source scripting language in 1995. However, it wasn’t until the release of PHP 3 in 1998, developed by Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski, that PHP gained widespread popularity as a server-side scripting language for web development. With its simplified syntax and ability to interact with databases, PHP quickly became a favorite among developers for creating dynamic and interactive websites. This update helped to solidify PHP’s place as one of the top choices for web development languages. Today, PHP is used by millions of websites, including some of the biggest and most popular ones like Facebook and Wikipedia. It has also expanded beyond just web development and is now used for other purposes such as server scripting and command line interface. The evolution of PHP from its early days as a personal tool to a powerful and versatile web development language is a testament to its adaptability and the dedication of its creators and community.
